In a Tuff Stuff article, Topps employee and designer Sy Berger said the 1954 set was his favorite.

1954 features the first season Topps included Ted Williams and gave him two cards, #1 & #250. He was signed to a 5 year contract with Topps. In 1959-60 Williams moved on from Topps and signed with Fleer.

Known for the rookie cards of Henry Aaron, Ernie Banks and Al Kaline and the absence of key Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial. Many stars did not appear in the early Topps sets because they couldn’t come to terms with Topps on a contract.

The 1954 set received a huge boost of publicity in its day by being a foldout feature in issue #1 of Sports Illustrated. Issue #2 featured more cards, this time of the New York Yankees, including one of Mantle, who was missing from the main set.
